Sago Palm

If you have ever wondered what it might have been like to walk through the undergrowth on the lookout for dinosaurs, then there's good news regarding fascinating houseplants. The Sago Palm, with its glossy, stiff, deep green leaves, resembles a miniature palm - but it represents the Cycad family, a primitive seed-bearing plant that has been around since the Permian Period - 280 million years ago.

Environment

Habitat: 65 - 85°F

Indoors Sago Plants will remain in the 2 - 3 foot range due to being potted. They appreciate moisture and medium levels of humidity (a mister can be useful). Sago Palms are not fussy when it comes to the types of soil that they enjoy - but it must be well drained. A Terra Cotta pot with a number of drainage outlets is recommended.

Maximum Size: 8'

Sago Palms do not grow above approximately 3 - 8 feet, making them ideal for those who want a hardy non-flowering houseplant that boasts attractive cones and stiff blue-green leaves.

Space / Planter Size: Medium / Large

The Sago Palm can grow to a height of around 12 feet outdoors, but it will rarely exceed 3 feet in height indoors. The slow-growing nature and the plant and its size make it ideal for apartments. A larger, well-drained Terra Cotta planters is the best choice.

History

The Sago Palm is abundant in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. It is also found in lowland forest habitats and wetlands in Papua New Guinea. It is much prized as a houseplant in these countries due to its low-maintenance character, size, and striking appearance. Sago Palms is a very old species and in past decades have become popular additions to households around the world.

Plant Care

These are plants that will flourish in warm and sunlit areas of the home. But bright direct sunlight all day will lead to damaged foliage (wilting primarily). Use a mister liberally - but avoid overwatering.

Water: Moderate

It is best to water every five to seven days. Ensure that the surface of the soil is dry (down to between 2 - 3 inches) before watering again. Overwatering will cause root rot.

Sun: Bright, Indirect

This plant likes moderate sunlight but indirect sunlight is better. In warm weather, the plant can be moved outside, but ensure that it is placed in a location that has dappled or indirect sunlight.

Care Level: Easy

Sago Palms are very easy to care for. Well established plants are usually drought resistant and require watering rarely. Sago Palms can live in excess of 100 years and will not typically reach maturity until 50 years old. larger, well-drained Terra Cotta planters will suit the needs of these sometimes hefty plants.
